Rams Controversy Does Not Deter Future Prospects

A Grade 12  football player for the Thom Trojans still plans on trying out for the University of Regina Rams, despite the recent criminal charges against two starting players on the college team.

“It doesn’t change how I feel about the Rams at all,” said Benjamin Ridgway, currently an offensive tackle for the Regina high school team. “It’s hard to know what people do in their personal life without being too controlling.” Said Ridgway.

Ridgway, a recurring U16 and U18 Team Sask player cares more about the coaching staff rather than who he is playing with. “When I commit to a team I care mostly about the coaching staff.”

“The Rams have one of the best in western Canada in my opinion,”  said Ridgway.

Michael Jourdan and Tarick Polius, two starting players last season with the Rams,  were charged with criminal organization, charges related to drug trafficking, specifically fentanyl, possessing the proceeds of a crime, as well as being in possession of a prohibited .22-calibre handgun and ammunition, according to the Regina Leader-Post.

In an attempt to gather information about the two starting players, Ink contacted Mark Mconkey on a phone call to hear his opinion, “I would love to give my piece, but I am under a gag order so I can’t,” said McConkey

An attempt to contact a Rams sponsor was rebuffed. “Thank you for your inquiry with Sask Lotteries. We will not be commenting on the matter,” said a Sask lotteries representative in an email.

On Feb, 21st at approximately two am, two Ram’s players were arrested for being in possession of about $2.5 million worth of fentanyl and $150 thousand in cash.

Both Polius and Jourdan have since been suspended from the team. Jourdan has recently been released from custody on bail with multiple conditions.

A news article from the Regina Leader-Post says “Jourdan must now abide by his release conditions, which include: attending court when required, reporting to his probation office, abstaining from alcohol or drugs not prescribed to him, and not attending businesses which primarily sell marijuana or alcohol.”

The remaining four that were arrested have not been granted bail. They will remain in custody until further notice.

Gary Giroux who works for the Regina Police Service Investigative Services Division has spoken to reporters at a conference concerning the recent drug bust.

He has not been able to answer a number of questions. The details would be provided in court, describing the investigations Giroux goes on to say “numerous tactics, information sources, intelligence tactics, as well as communication with police in other jurisdictions.” provided by the Regina Leader-Post:
