Sustaining Local Supplement Business One Purchase at a Time

Canadian products are already some of the best-selling items in supplement stores in Canada.

“It is essential to support Canadian companies right now,” said Supplement World Canada owner Josh MacGowan. “There are a plethora of high-quality, top-selling supplements made by Canadians, in Canada.”

MacGowan lives in Saskatoon and says Canadian supplements are important in his stores.

“Believe Supplements, Supplement World Labs and TC Nutrition are some amazing Canadian companies. Supplement World Labs and TC are both Saskatchewan-owned as well, and Believe has two partners – one of whom lives in Saskatoon.”

With the looming threat of tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States, local businesses urgently need Canadian revenue to stay in business.

Certain industries in the country rely heavily on American products flying off their shelves to turn a profit. Some businesses have a different model, pushing primarily Canadian-sourced and distributed goods.

The dietary and nutritional supplement industry is full of Canadian manufacturers and distributors.

Insight10‘s Canada nutritional supplements market analysis predicts that by 2030 “Canada Nutrition and Supplements market will reach a value of $58.62 (billion) from $30.52 (billion) in 2022.”

In a booming market, the article points out that it predominantly features local companies leading the product sales.

Though dietary supplements aren’t taken by everyone, the ones who do purchase these products pay a high cost.

“I would say supplements probably cost me at least $600 a year,” said Supplement World Regina customer Layne Gilroy. “It is definitely expensive, but I think it is worth the money.

“I mainly buy protein powders, creatine and pre-workout powder. TC Nutrition makes the Batch-27 pre-workout. It is probably the best-tasting pre-workout mixture on the market. It is nice to know they are Canadian.”

For some, it is a new practice to check where each individual product was manufactured.

“I will absolutely be more careful with my purchases to ensure they are all Canadian-made products,” said Gilroy.

TC Nutrition sells products in the United States through plenty of supplement stores such as Popeye’s Supplements. The company also has an American website where supplements are sold and shipped to the United States.

With a reported 25 per cent tariff on every Canadian import to the United States, there is a risk that American supplement stores will cut TC Nutrition products from their shelves entirely and opt to sell cheaper, American-made products.

When reached out for comment, TC Nutrition has yet to respond.

“Honestly I never check if anything is made in Canada,” said Supplement King customer Khenan Colbow.

“I now know some of my common purchases are Canadian, but some aren’t. It is important to be more aware nowadays.”

A CBC News article states the Federal government has launched a “$6-billion aid package for businesses impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and relaxing some employment insurance (EI) rules to help workers.”
