In just his second game with the Regina Rams, Carter Ashman has quickly emerged as one of the most dangerous runners in Canada West football. On Friday, Sept. 11, in a 23-8 victory over the Manitoba Bisons, Ashman broke out for a game-high 136 rushing yards on 16 attempts and recorded his first career U SPORTS touchdown.
“It felt great,” said Ashman. ” It was a moment I’ve been looking forward to for a long time now, and the guys up front did a great job for me all night. I’m glad I was able to contribute and help the team get an important win.”
Ashman currently ranks third in CanWest in both total rush yards and rush yards per game behind Marvyn Larozar (UBC) and teammate Christian Katende. The nationally fourth-ranked Rams sit atop the CanWest conference with a record of 2-0, and boast the highest-ranked run offence in the conference.
Ashman spent last season with the junior Regina Thunder alongside his twin brother Jackson, and touched on how his experience with the team helped prepare him for the U SPORTS jump.
“I think the biggest benefit from my time with the Thunder was learning how to be consistently prepared week to week.”
The biggest adjustments have come with the size, speed and wits of his opponents.
“Everyone is bigger, faster, and much more disciplined,” said Ashman. “There is less time to make decisions, so it’s important that I trust myself, as well as my teammates.”
Ashman feels since joining the Rams his largest improvement has been in his understanding of the game. “I am getting much better when it comes to staying patient behind the line and finding the running lanes my teammates create for me.”
Carter attributes his success to Chris Ashman, his father and two time Canadian bowl champion with the Regina Rams in 1997 and 1998.
” My dad has helped me grow into the player and person I am today,” said Carter. “He taught me and my brother from a young age to work hard in everything we do, and is the reason football is so important too me.”
When asked about Ashman, teammate and Rams offensive linemen Emmett Reinhardt instantly began talking about his character “Carter is a student of the game, he takes pride in learning and knowing that he can always get better,” said Reinhardt.
“He’s a great teammate and cares a lot about the guys around him. Overall he’s a great person and an awesome time too be around.”
Reinhardt also commended Ashman’s abilities on the field stating “He’s very explosive and his ability to put a foot in the ground and cut is incredible, he’s one of the best running backs I’ve had the opportunity to block for.”
Ashman and the Rams look to continue their hot start to the season this Saturday, against the UBC Thunderbirds at Thunderbird Stadium 7:00 p.m. CST.
