What started as a casual, easy going club exceeded expectations after the University of Regina Roblox Club had its first ever meeting, with 55-60 people in attendance and about 130 signed up.
Roblox is an online gaming platform where users can play and build games alone or with friends. It is free to use and easily accessible to students.
The club’s leadership, consisting so far of only a president and some volunteers, is now tasked with managing a rapidly growing community. of students looking to play the nostalgic games with friends.
“I think the university needs more fun clubs because not everything has to be academic,” said the Club President in his second year of a bachelors in chemistry, who has otherwise chosen to stay anonymous.
“We also need to have some fun,” said the Club President.
Shiloh Gonzales is a second year creative technology student, and designed the logo for the club. She is a volunteer and member with the Roblox Club.
“I thought it was an interesting thing because I saw the videos about other Roblox clubs online,” said Gonzales on her choice to be involved with the club.
One of the biggest appeals of the club is the lighthearted approach to a student club.
“It’s just a fun time to go and hang out with people,” said Gonzales
While academic clubs are important to the student body, students need exciting social events and interaction to stay balanced.
It has been a sort of online trend lately to start Roblox clubs at academic institutions across North America.
“I saw a lot of videos about Roblox clubs being started around other schools, and I thought that it would be a good idea to have a fun club on campus”
Amidst all the fun, the president and volunteers must consider the future and how they will run a club as big as this one.
“It’s not feasible to run it by myself,” said the Club President.
There is a lot to think about when running a club; what events to hold, think of activities, and harnessing the attention of that many people at once.
They are currently accepting applications for executive roles.
The Club President said, “It’s been hard to get people to want to become executives.”
In order to become a ratified club, they must have at least four executives. This is a long process which can’t yet happen with their current team.
